Renewable energy
Renewable energy is energy generated from natural resources, such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, wave, and geothermal heat. All of these sources of energy are replenished by nature.
Renewable energy sources do not require raw materials, apart from construction needs and maintenance. Where they replace fossil fuels, they also help to reduce the release of the greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide, into the atmosphere.
Scottish Natural Heritage has a key role in advising on these energy developments.
