The role of the SNH Board

The SNH Board is the ultimate decision-making body in SNH and has the following responsibilities:

  • to establish the overall strategic direction of SNH within the policy, planning and resources framework determined by Scottish Ministers.
  • to ensure that the Scottish Ministers are kept informed of any changes likely to impact on the strategic direction of SNH or on the attainability of its targets.
  • to respond to requests and directions from the Scottish Government.
  • to ensure that SNH operates in an open, accountable and responsible way, complies with guidance on the use of public funds, and makes efficient and effective use of staff.
  • to establish committees of the Board as its sees fit and maintain an overview of their work.
  • to appoint a Chief Executive, and to work with the Chief Executive and the Management Team to provide leadership, direction, support and guidance to the staff of SNH.

The Board also makes decisions on the notification of Sites of Special Scientific Interest and in respect of other occasional key items of casework.

The SNH Board's outward-facing role

The SNH Board also has an important role in engaging with a variety of strategic partners and stakeholders, and the most pro-active way it does this is through the twice-monthly (except in July and August) Area Evening Receptions.
