The role of the Protected Areas Committee
The Protected Areas Committee has involvement in:
- The notification of Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) under section 3 of the Nature Conservation (Scotland) Act 2004.
- Extensions to existing SSSIs under section 5 of the 2004 Act denotification of all or parts of existing SSSIs under section 9 of the 2004 Act.
- Reviewing the advice received from the Advisory Committee on SSSIs (ACSSSI) when SNH has been obliged to refer a representation made at least 10 years after a previous SSSI notification.
- Denotifying all or part of an SSSI.
- Considering and approving SNH advice to Scottish Government on the suitability of sites taht are put forward as possible Natura sites.
