Equality and Diversity
We are committed to promoting diversity and equality for our employees, the users of our services and in our role as participants in caring for and enjoying Scotlands nature.
- We seek to ensure that individuals are treated equally and fairly and that decisions on recruitment, selection, training, promotion and career development are based on objective and job-related criteria.
- We aim to maintain a culture which recognises and rewards individual achievement and merit regardless of age, colour, disability, ethnic or national origin, gender, marital status, sexual orientation, religion or philosophical belief.
- We strive to meet the needs of all sectors of the community in our activities.
SNH Equality Schemes
Organisations in the public sector are expected to show a clear respect for equality and human rights when carrying out their functions. When providing services and developing policies and procedures, public authorities have a vital role to play in promoting the values and practices of a fair and democratic society. The Race Equality Duty (2002), the Disability Equality Duty (2006) and the Gender Equality Duty (2007) give us a responsibility to carry out Equality Impact Assessments on all our current and proposed projects.
Our Equality schemes, and annual reports on them, are:
- Disability Equality Scheme

(Dec 2007-Nov 2008)

Our Equality schemes are constantly being improved, therefore we welcome your comments. This will help us to ensure that we can fully meet the needs of Scotland's people in all our policies and services.
We monitor our action plans continuously, and review our schemes every three years. The revised action plans from our three Equality schemes are to be incorporated in our SNH Equality Scheme.
SNH Equality Scheme Discussion Afternoon
We held our Equality Scheme Discussion Afternoon on Wednesday 1st September 2010 at the John McIntyre Conference Centre in Edinburgh to gather opinions on what should be included in our SNH Equality Scheme. We now are awaiting the publishing of the Public Sector Equality Duty, due in April, to inform setting our Equality outcomes for future years
Equality Impact Assessments
We carry out Equality Impact Assessments on our activities to determine their potential impact on the various strands of equality. This includes engaging with all sectors of the community to take their views into account. You can find out more about the process, and access past and current consultations, on our Equality impact assessment webpage.
