Green Exercise

Green exercise describes physical activity in outdoor settings which have strong natural environment components (e.g. green spaces, paths, parks, nature reserves and countryside). It includes

  • walking and relaxation
  • outdoor learning and play
  • recreation and sport
  • practical conservation
  • gardening
  • active travel
  • rehabilitation and recovery

Projects which promote green exercise for its health benefits are now quite common throughout Scotland. An NHS Health Scotland study has found over 100 projects which have some involvement with the health sector.

In 2007, Scottish Natural Heritage, Forestry Commission Scotland and NHS Health Scotland established the Green Exercise Partnership  PDF document  'to promote better health and quality of life for people in Scotland through greater use of the outdoors for physical activity and contact with nature'.

Scottish Natural Heritage has helped to establish two green exercise programmes - the Walking for Health initiative delivered by Paths for All external site   and Green Gym run by BTCV external site .  Through Grounds for Learning, we also provide support for the improvement of school grounds for outdoor learning and play. Other local projects may be eligible for grant from us.

We would welcome information on other projects which demonstrate the contribution of the natural heritage to better physical and mental health and well-being. Please contact snh.healthcasestudies@snh.gov.uk
