LNRs - Places for People and Nature
Why a LNR?
Education and Opportunity - LNRs are for the benefit of both local people and visitors alike. They provide an opportunity to experience nature at first hand, and to learn about it. They can also improve quality of life by providing a place to unwind from the demands of everyday life. More…
Protect Wildlife - LNRs also protect nature. Wildlife and habitats are looked after and enhanced, often with the involvement of local communities. The sites are protected from inappropriate development through the planning system.
Shows Council’s Commitment - In addition, because a Local Nature Reserve is a statutory declaration, it is a very clear signal to a local community of the local authority's commitment to nature conservation. LNRs can also help local authorities meet Open Space, Local Agenda 21, Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP) and Sustainable Development targets and inclusion into local authority Core Path Plans.
