About the Week

Scottish Biodiversity Week has been held annually since 2001. It originally started off as a local initiative in Fife in 2000 and has since grown to become a national fixture in the Scottish calendar.

This year it will run from 15th to 23rd May 2010, taking in International Biodiversity Day (IBD) on 22nd May – the latter is promoted by the Convention on Biological Diversity Secretariat.  2010 is a very special year as it also the International Year of Biodiversity as declared by the United Nations.

The aim of Scottish Biodiversity Week is 3-fold.

  1. Firstly, to stimulate public interest about nature and wildlife through a wide range of enjoyable events
  2. Secondly, to promote public understanding of biodiversity and its critical role in sustaining all life, and its quality, on Earth.
  3. And thirdly, to encourage people to take an interest in helping to conserve biodiversity for both current and future generations.

During 2009, scores of events took place around Scotland in a wide range of places including city parks, greenspaces, nature reserves and the wider countryside and coast.
