Farming and the wider community
Farmland is an important part of the nature and landscapes of Scotland and provides much of its wildlife habitat, landscape interest, sporting resources but farming has also strong connections:
- With the wider rural community through activities ranging from providing opportunities for recreation and walks, visitor facilities, wildlife tourism, family and education activities
- With developing a body of knowledge and demonstrating the quality of production including organic production and accreditation schemes
- With the local produce that are characteristic of each area and a rekindled interest in provenance and local food
- With urban areas - where home production, for example through allotments, and farmers markets, offer an opportunity to connect consumers with local producers and the countryside
