Upland and moorland
A rich variety
Scotland's uplands and moorlands support a wide range of habitats, species and land uses. Balancing their many and varied management needs is a key challenge.
Grazing: too much, too little?
Some habitats and species benefit from heavy grazing; others require very little. Having the right animals in the right place is not as easy as it may seem.
Wet or dry?
Wet habitats were often viewed as unproductive, with drains used to try and increase livestock and game numbers. This is changing and rewetting is now common.
Fire: friend or foe?
Some trees and plants do perish in fire, but others need it to regenerate and spread seed.
