Project research

This project is based on wader research carried out during the mid 1980s and repeat surveys in the mid 1990s. This work showed that hedgehogs which were slowly spreading northwards across the island chain, were a recent and additional problem causing the wader populations of lapwing, redshank and dunlin in particular to decline.

In 2011, a consortium led by BTO external site , and including The James Hutton Institute external site  and MacArthur Green Ltd external site . were commissioned to provide specialist scientific advice for a plan of research through to 2014.

This work will focus on determining causes and level of predation. Annual reports will be available each spring, as Commissioned Reports.
