SNH to back Nature of Scotland Awards 201321-NOV-2012
Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) is to back the Nature of Scotland Awards scheme again in 2013, its second year.
The scheme, co-ordinated by RSPB Scotland, recognises and celebrates excellence, innovation and outstanding achievement in Scottish nature conservation. Last year it attracted more than 90 entries.
The 2013 scheme opened for entries last week with a closing date of 15 March 2013.
Ian Jardine, SNH chief executive and one of the judges, said:
"Scotland's natural environment is one of its greatest assets. It is crucial to our personal health and well-being, our social interactions and to the economy.
"There are however many challenges facing nature today. And many individuals and groups are working hard to help it to face those challenges. We should all be grateful to them and the awards help to recognise and reward their achievements.
"Next year is the Year of Natural Scotland, with a whole host of events and activities to celebrate Scotland's nature. The Nature of Scotland Awards will be an important part of that. I am delighted to be involved and very much look forward to seeing another round of high quality entries."
There are now eight award categories of Marine, Sustainable Development, Politician of the Year, Innovation, Outstanding Contribution, Species Champion, Community Initiative, Youth and Education.
And this year Sophie Stafford, editor of BBC Wildlife Magazine, joins the judging panel. The other judges are: Stuart Housden OBE, RSPB Scotland Director, Sir John Lister-Kaye OBE, naturalist and conservationist, Euan McIlwraith, BBC Scotland presenter, and Dr Ian Jardine, SNH Chief Executive.
Closing date for entries is Friday 15 March 2013. People can apply through the Nature of Scotland Awards website at www.rspb.org.uk/thingstodo/natureofscotland/
