Our approach
We have published two key documents which outline our approach to renewable energy and which underpin the advice we offer on individual proposals:
Scottish Natural Heritage's approach to Renewable Energy sets out our position on renewable energy development. We recognise the huge importance of mitigating the effects of climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We strongly support, therefore, the development of renewable energy as a substitute for fossil fuels, subject to a sufficient priority being placed on energy efficiency and demand reduction, and subject to planning for renewables taking due care to minimise impacts on Scotland's nature and landscapes.
Energy and the Natural Heritage
outlines how energy use and generation impact upon nature and landscapes, both directly and through the effects of climate change. It indicates how we view these energy issues, and sets out the broad approach that we will take when advising on the natural heritage aspects of energy-related development over the coming years.
Governance
Our approach to renewable energy is endorsed by the SNH Board. Any major changes in our approach require Board approval and very significant cases (such as the Lewis windfarm proposal) are sometimes discussed at Board level. Our Scientific Advisory Committee provides advice on how we carry out our research work and on the scientific evidence base which underpins our advice on renewables.
