The remoter parts of Scotland such as the Cuillins and the high tops of the Cairngorms, where there is little evidence of human use, are treasured as an important part of Scottish identity and a valuable economic asset.

Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) is working to reduce greylag goose pressure on the island's machair corn crop livestock grazings by extending goose scaring activity throughout the islands. The organisation has responded this year by increasing funding for a widespread goose scaring programme on machair land from Barra to north to Berneray.
