The need for action

Scotland's landscapes are of a richness, diversity and distinctiveness that make them unparalleled in Europe.  They underpin the tourist industry and influence perceptions of many of our products and services, attract and retain our skilled workforce, and provide inspiration for the arts.  Crucially, they contribute to our identity and provide the distinctiveness and sense of place that we value and enjoy.

How our landscapes change, in response to both natural forces and the needs of society, is therefore critical.  This change should just not be accepted, but actively guided to ensure our landscapes can continue to enrich our lives and benefit Scotland.  This is more important today when our ability to shape our surroundings is so great.

The Charter has therefore been developed to draw attention and promote action for this vital resource.

What can we do?

The Charter challenges us to take action for landscape.  We all have a role to play, and the Charter identifies a number of actions that can be taken by:

  • individuals, communities and non-government organisations
  • land managers
  • developers
  • local authorities, public agencies and government departments

These actions celebrate landscape, aid understanding, and promote its care.
