Masterplanning
This is an integrated approach to designing developments, often larger ones such as settlement expansions and regeneration projects. It is a way of considering a range of site factors, including present and future land use, urban design, landscape and green networks, built form, infrastructure, energy use, circulation and service provision.
This approach helps planners and designers make the most of any natural and cultural assets of the site and surrounding areas such as habitats, landscape features, views and historic field patterns. It can sometimes include community involvement in the design process.
Techniques of Landscape Character Assessment and Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment are usually used to consider landscape. Further guidance and examples can be found in Planning Advice Note PAN 83 Masterplanning
