Researchers

Research into protected species is an important way for us to increase our knowledge about these species and how to conserve them.  However, some research may involve methods which disturb or harm a protected species.  If you think your research is likely to break the law, it may still be possible to carry it out under a licence from ourselves.  Remember that possible disturbance may be prevented if you follow appropriate codes of practice (e.g. the Scottish Outdoor Access Code external site and the Scottish Marine Wildlife Watching Code external site ).

Be aware that you may be committing an offence if you keep certain species or their parts (e.g. a European protected species), even if the species is not found naturally in Scotland.
