Woodland managers
Many protected species use woodland habitat (both coniferous and deciduous). It's important that appropriate species surveys are done to identify which species are using your woodland and how you might avoid disturbing them or harming their breeding sites for example.
We have produced joint guidance with the Forestry Commission Scotland for woodland operators in relation to bats
, otter
, great crested newt
and wildcat
. All these creatures are European protected species of animal which may be found in Scottish woodlands and are strictly protected. You should carry out a survey for these species before applying for a felling licence from Forestry Commission Scotland.
The red squirrel, pine marten and lots of species of bird and plant can also be found in Scottish woodlands. Find out more about the law protecting these animals and plants, their distribution and ecology from our species and legal framework pages.
