Great crested newt - update

The following are brief summaries of some of the action that we and our partners have done since the Species Action Framework was launched. They're in chronological order, with the most recent updates at the top of the page.

7 December 2009

During 2009 a leaflet was produced by the Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Trust (formerly the Herpetological Conservation Trust), with the financial support of Scottish Natural Heritage, to encourage use of the Scottish Rural Development Programme (SRDP) to carry out conservation work for great crested newts.

2008

Pond creation work undertaken in the Lothians - Two ponds were created by Lothians Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group and Lothian Amphibian and Reptile Group, funded by  West Lothian Council and Scottish Natural Heritage (other planned work had to be abandoned following the financial collapse of Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group Scotland).

Pond creation work undertaken in the Borders - Six ponds were created by the Tweed Forum and Borders Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group, and funded by Scottish Natural Heritage.

Pond creation work undertaken in Wigtownshire - Three ponds were created by Culmore Cottages and Scottish Natural Heritage. All-abilities viewing facilities were also set up at the pond.

2007

Pond creation and restoration work undertaken in Falkirk - Eight ponds were created or restored by Falkirk Biodiversity Partnership, Lothian Amphibian and Reptile Group and British Trust for Conservation Volunteers, and funded by Scottish Natural Heritage.

Pond creation work in Mid and West Lothian - 37 ponds were created by the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group and Local Amphibian and Reptile Groups, with financial contributions from the local authority councils and Scottish Natural Heritage.
