SNH Commissioned Report 897: Population viability analysis of the Sula Sgeir gannet population

The annual harvest of young (pre-fledged northern gannets, known as gugas) from the island of Sula Sgeir is licensed by SNH. In the light of questions about the sustainability of the population given the current level of the annual harvest permitted under licence, a population viability analysis of the Sula Sgeir gannet population was undertaken. The purpose of this is to assess the size of harvest that would adversely affect the long term viability of the breeding population. The model uses known estimates of demographic parameters (breeding success and survival of different age classes) along with an estimate of immigration to assess the impact of varying levels of annual harvest. The analysis demonstrates that the current level of harvest is not likely to affect the long term sustainability of the Sula Sgeir northern gannet population.
