Grassland in Scotland is almost always the product of human activity. The first grassland in the Scottish lowlands was created by early farmers who cleared the forest and scrub that originally covered Scotland. It has been maintained by farmers harvesting each year's growth and thus preventing the return of trees and shrubs.
